The Canonical Hours mark the hours of the day with special prayer services, a tradition going back to the early monastic orders of the Roman church and is still practiced to this day. The Daily Office is specific to the Anglican church, which includes Morning prayer (Matins) and Evening Prayer (Evensong). Both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches celebrate similar Evening Prayer services, known as Vespers. Many other reformed churches (including the Presbyterian Church) have adopted their own versions of this worship service.

Whether called Evening Prayer, Vespers, or Evensong, this liturgy is one of hymns, prayers, and scripture. There is no sermon offered, but rather the focus of the worship is on personal prayer to God. During this service we will experience the transition from day into evening, and prayer for protection as we enter into darkness, reminded that Jesus Christ is our everlasting light.

Our Evensong will be led by a women’s ensemble, singing anthems as part of the liturgy. This specific practice comes from the Anglican church, which uses choral singing as a foundational part of its liturgical practice. This Evensong will be our first worship service in our newly decorated church. We will gather together to prepare our worship space for Christmas, and subsequently celebrate our first worship in the space that same day. We will welcome all to this special service to prayer and worship with us as we enter into the Advent season.
-->

[5

post-1485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
