Early on the morning of November 25, 2006, the Allison family, Clay and Yvonne Johnson, and Jane Hackett met to participate in a new mission adventure with "Off the Floor Pittsburgh".
This organization was started two years ago by M.J. McCarty out of the Mt. Lebanon United Presbyterian Church. Its mission is to provide furniture and other household necessities to Pittsburgh families who may be sleeping on the floor and often living out of boxes. So far, over 80 families and 170 children have been served. After hearing M.J. speak about this mission outreach in September at Coffee and Conversation, we felt called to form a pickup/delivery team at Glenshaw.
Our first trip consisted of two furniture pickups, a stop at the storage locker in Greentree and the loading of additional furniture into a U-haul, Clay's trailer and Jane's van. We made four deliveries to families living in apartments in Duquesne and one delivery to a house in Wilkinsburg. Some of the stops required heavy lifting and maneuvering up two flights of stairs, with a great deal of creative engineering going on by Clay, Dale, John and Andrew. The families were most appreciative of the efforts to provide them a more comfortable place to live. It was truly an uplifting experience for all of us.
We would love to have a few more members to join our team. We welcome those willing to drive, lend storage arms, help decipher MapQuest directions or anyone with a willing heart to help. If you are interested, please contact our church office. You will receive more than you give.
